We are able to accommodate all your childcare needs for children from 1 to 5 years of age. We offer nursery care and some holiday care over the Easter and Summer breaks.
Okewood Nursery is a safe, happy, friendly setting for little ones to have fun, learn and grow.
The Nursery is in a beautiful setting in the rural village of Walliswood on the Surrey/Sussex borders. You can find us in the heart of Walliswood village (opposite the Scarlett Arms public house) near Dorking. The Nursery is in a purpose-built building in safe, private, secure grounds.
We accept Government funding from 1 year + and offer 30 hour funded places. Parents/Carers can have the flexibility to choose which times during the week to take the funded hours. Government funding is only available during term time, not during holiday sessions (see below for term dates). We also accept childcare vouchers and tax-free childcare payments.
Okewood Nursery is open from 8.00 to 5:00pm Monday to Friday during term time with additional Holiday Clubs available during holiday times if required.

The inspiration to open Okewood Nursery School – as it was then – came from the sudden closure of a nursery school in the next village, which most local children attended. Additionally, with the threatened closure of Okewood First School it seemed a logical move to open a nursery school to attract children into the lovely village of Walliswood, some of whom would then, hopefully, feed in to the First School to increase their numbers.
After hours of hard labour from many villagers to build and fit-out the Nursery school, the first Okewood Nursery building was opened in April 1992 on the edge of the First School playground. The Nursery benefited from many of the First School facilities including the legendary “home cooked” lunches in the school canteen for children staying all day.
Sadly the First School didn’t survive, but the Nursery went from strength to strength, attracting children from within a ten mile radius, and feeding many local schools.
In 1996 when the First School shut, the Nursery relocated to its own newly fitted-out building, in the Old School Garden, where it remains today in the heart of the village. Within its secure, fenced boundary the grounds provide grass, tarmac and soft-play areas, under the shelter of three fabulously majestic oak trees, so the concept of mirroring all indoor activities outside is easily provided.
At Okewood Nursery we work with children, parents, external agencies and the community to ensure the welfare and safety of children and to give them the very best start in life. Children have the right to be treated with respect, be helped to thrive and to be safe from any abuse in whatever form.
We support the children within our care, protect them from maltreatment and have robust procedures in place to prevent the impairment of children’s health and development. in our setting we strive to protect children from the risk of radicalisation and we promote acceptance and tolerance of other beliefs and cultures. Safeguarding is a much wider subject than the elements covered within this single statement, therefore this document should be used in conjunction with the nursery’s other policies and procedures.
